The Last of Our Days in Iceland

This journal entry wraps up our last few days in Iceland and then we’ll post the overall observations we’ve made of the country. It was so nice to be back in the apartment we like so much in Reykjavik. Wednesday, I did my now-familiar process of returning or picking up the rental car. This was returning, so drive the 45 minutes to airport to return the car (all three of my friends at Sixt were there this morning – Pavel, James, and Agnieszka), then wait for bus 55 to come along and take me to Fjordur, then walk/run the 4.5 miles home. It’s nice to be a regular now and be able to help the new arrivals to know the process on this particular bus route because it usually doesn’t go all the way into the city center and they need to transfer to line 1 at Fjordur. Sandy worked on her things, including lodging for upcoming travel while I was gone. We had Greek salads for lunch and then grilled Arctic Char for dinner along with roasted potatoes. Sandy headed out to the trail along the water for a 30-minute workout. It was nice having the afternoon and evening at the apartment.

Thursday and Friday were similar in that we spent most of the time relaxing at home. We had Greek salads and for dinners, we grilled chicken and had broccoli and then tacos the next night. Friday was the first of the month – our monthly office day. Friday night, I went to the sports complex and joined the group for pickleball. We had tried to sell our hand weights through Facebook Marketplace, but the buyer didn’t show up – jackass. He messaged on Saturday saying he could stop by that day, but we were already gone and had left the weights for our AirBnB host.

Saturday was moving day because the apartment wasn’t available for our last two nights in Iceland. It was raining, but we managed to stay fairly dry. We left the apartment at 11am and walked seven minutes to the bus stop. That bus took us to the main stop in our area of Reykjavik and we then switched to Route 1, which took us to Fjordur. At Fjordur, we switched to Route 55, and that bus took us to the stop three minutes away from our new apartment in Keflavik (the city where the airport is located). We had time to kill before check-in, and we grabbed lunch at the Polish restaurant across from our new apartment. We both had chicken schnitzels and I had borsch soup. After dropping our stuff off at the apartment, we headed out to walk the town – in winds that were gusting to 54 miles per hour. That was crazy and made for a good workout when we were walking against the wind. Our first stop was the Kokulist bakery where I had a cinnamon roll and Sandy had a chocolate-covered cream cookie. Next, we walked toward the harbor and it started to rain, so we popped into the Dubliner pub for a Guinness (Mike) and a Kilkenny (Sandy). Then we continued our walk to the harbor, where there is a troll’s cave, but it was already closed for the day.

After my picture by the cave, we headed back to the Dubliner for a Guinness and wings (Mike) and a 1664 Kronenburg and pizza (Sandy). It was a great travel day – we think we should include bakeries and beer on all of our travel days.

This morning, we walked to the Park Inn hotel for brunch and we both had a delicious full English breakfast along with pancakes and fruit. We worked on our schedule for the coming week for a couple of hours and then went back to the bakery to get a Nutella donut and I had a hot chocolate. We camped out there for a bit to work on logistics. Our apartment here in Keflavik is a tiny one room studio and it’s not as appealing to just hang out there, which is why we opted to stay working at the bakery. After our work, we went back to the Dubliner to finish our time in Iceland with Icelandic beers – I had Gull and Sandy had Boli and we shared a pita sandwich and fries. Then it was back to the apartment to finish off the day with a couple of episodes of Frasier.
