- Fes has a population of 1.3 million. It is the 2nd largest city in Morocco (Casablanca is the largest city with 3.4 million).
- Fes is the oldest city in Morocco. It was founded in the 8th century.
- The Medina (ancient walled district) is the world’s largest car-free urban area. Only humans, mules, and cats roam the nine-thousand winding alleys because it is too narrow for cars. For this reason, we like hanging out in the Medina in Fes more than Marrakesh.
- The Old Town, known as Fes el Bali, is one of the best-preserved old towns of the Arab-Muslim world and is listed as a World Heritage Site.
- Many ancient tanneries still exist in Morocco, and the Chouara Tannery is the largest in the city and one of the oldest in the world. It uses the same system to dye leather today as used 1000 years ago.
- The taxis in Fes are red.
- Avenue Hassan II has a beautiful area to walk/run in the middle of the street. That’s where we did our cardio workouts.
- The Middle Atlas Mountains border the town and provide great views.
- Love the car washes (which we have also seen in other cities around the world). People wearing boots are on city streets with their buckets of water and cleaning supplies and drivers pull up to get their cars washed.
- Lots and lots of new construction taking place.
